Although we had hoped construction of the rink would proceed this fall in time for completion for this winter season, some other factors led to the decision to build it in 2012 in order to ensure a high quality rink and mitigate construction costs.
The Geotechnical Survey Report Report was not favourable with regards to the site conditions. For reasons of longevity, structural integrity, ground swelling potential, safety and cost the engineering; the recommendation is to utilize concrete piles and a structured concrete slab.
Now that we have the structural design and specification, along with the Geotechnical report, we will invite companies to bid on the concrete work and site preparation.
We have the bids in for the rink boards/accessories and installation. Upon selection/confirmation of the vendor, they can install on fairly short notice and require approx. 7-10 days to complete the installation. Naturally this will follow after the site has been prepared and concrete foundation poured
Jennifer Scott was engaged to assist with helping us to get an extension on the timeline to use the proceeds from the Casino’s. The request will be to extend to the end of August 2012.
An application was submitted for additional funds to support our project. As it commonly happens, the program was oversubscribed and as a result this will factor into the amount of funding we might receive. Depending on the outcome, we will have a second opportunity to reapply in March 2012.
After three years of working with City of Edmonton planners, representatives from parks and recreation departments and other stakeholders, Twin Brooks is finally going to get its outdoor rink. Finances have been in place for some time, thanks to community fundraising and a Provincial grant, but site approval has gone through a number of recommendations and changes.
The final location of the Twin Brooks Community League’s .8 hectare site, approved late this summer, is on 12th Avenue between the GPN playground and the land set aside for the First Time Home Buyer’s project.
This winter will see construction of the cement base, boards, player’s boxes, and parking. The City of Edmonton is being contracted to provide flooding a couple of times over the season to the new rink and to another snowbank rink beside it. Next spring, progress will continue with our own water utility, lighting, paving of the parking lot and other basic amenities.
This rink is the result of the TBCL community survey in 2008 where it was indicated as a top priority for the league. Residents listed construction of a building on the site and a water/spray park as possible projects to follow the ice rink. Placement of the new rink on the land also shows possible placement for two tennis courts in the future.
